There are two main types of coatings available on the market, water-based coatings and solvent-based coatings. What is the difference between waterborne and solventborne coatings?

First from the composition and environmental protection:

The main type of waterborne architectural coatings is latex paint. Latex paint is mainly composed of water, emulsion, pigment and filler and various additives. The composition of solvent-based coating is composed of resin, pigment, filler, solvent and various additives. It can be seen that the dispersion medium of the water-based paint is water. After the paint is applied, the water volatilized from the coating film is water and a small amount of additives, which have environmental protection and safety properties; and the dispersion medium of the solvent-based paint is an organic solvent (generally referred to as VOC), the organic solvents volatilized from the coating film are mostly toxic and harmful substances, which not only cause harm to the human body, but also cause pollution to the natural environment.

From the physicochemical properties of the film:

Some physicochemical properties of waterborne coatings are inferior to solventborne coatings such as chemical resistance, weatherability, stain resistance and the like. Therefore, the service life of water-based paints is not as long as solvent-based paints. However, water-based coatings also have some high-grade products: such as water-based silicone-acrylic coatings, fluorocarbon coatings, etc., the service life can also reach l0 to 15 years.

From the construction environment:

In the construction environment, water-based paint construction generally requires construction above 5 °C, and solvent-based paint can also be applied at O ​​°C. Therefore, in the northern region, solvent-based paint can be used for construction near winter.

From the requirements of the grassroots:

The moisture content of the base layer of waterborne coating construction should be less than 10%, and the moisture content of the base layer of solvent-based coating construction should be less than 8%. The water-based paint has better gas permeability, and the water vapor inside the base layer can be diffused outward; while the solvent-based paint is densely formed, if the water content of the base layer is high, the water vapor cannot be volatilized from the coating film, and foaming is easy.

As can be seen from the above, water-based paints are more environmentally friendly than solvent-based paints, but in terms of physicality and construction environment, water-based paints are not as solvent-based paints. As for the current development trend of the domestic coatings market, waterborne coatings have the advantages of long-term development and are more in line with sustainable development.
