Korean researchers announced that it has discovered an enzyme that can inhibit the growth of various cancer cells, including cancerous and hematological cancer cells, and may help explore new therapies for cancer.

The team led by An Chengguan, a professor of microbiology engineering at Korea’s Konkuk University, said that a ligase called “Magnolia E3” invades the serine protein kinase, which is a key “assembly” of various cancer cells.

"We have found that magnolia can invade the mitochondria of serine protein kinase cells and then break down serine protein kinases," Yonhap quoted the research team's conclusion on the 18th.

Mitochondria are the power plants of cells that control cell division, growth, and death.

According to Yonhap, the scientific community discovered a direct link between serine protein kinases and cancer cell growth in the 1990s, but there has been no particularly effective method for inhibiting active serine protein kinases.
