The world's largest and most successful tidal power hydroelectric generating unit is called “Oyster” and its core component is a 315kW high efficiency grid-connected converter system from Emerson.

Oyster Marine Generator is located in the waters off the Orkney Islands in northern Scotland. It consists of a huge buoyant steel flap hinged to a base that is fixed to the seabed. As the waves roll over the equipment, the steel flap swings back and forth to drive two hydraulic pistons. The high pressure water in the two pump cylinders is pumped to the shore, and the high-pressure fresh water containing energy is used to drive the impact type with the scoop bucket. The turbine, the turbine and the flywheel are connected to each other to slow down the energy fluctuations and drive a standard induction generator.
