Stained glass art history
Stained glass has existed since ancient times and may originate from the Near East. This form of art rose in the 10th century. The oldest and most complete stained glass window dates back to the early 12th century and is the window of the Prophet in Augsburg, Germany. Early Gothic windows painted simple single portraits and used predominantly vibrant colors. The windows of the 12th century have become larger, introducing a narrative picture. In the 14th and 15th centuries, Jean Cassin introduced a glass painting called silver dye, giving artists more choices. Stained glass art has declined in the Renaissance. Bright translucent colors and two-dimensional patterns are no longer the mainstream, but instead they are real-life sets drawn using perspective and enamel colors. The 20th century architects designed the glass curtain wall, and the painters began to use pure colors and abstract forms, which brought the resurrection of stained glass windows. In the 20th century, many artists designed windows for religious and secular architecture, including Henry Matisse and Marc Chagall.
