Japan's marine research and development agency announced on the 6th that its "Earth" deep-sea exploration vessel drilled 2,132 meters below the seabed in the coastal area of Hachinohe, Aomori Prefecture, and created the world's deepest seabed drilling record. The local water depth is about 1,180 meters. Previously, the deepest seabed drilling record was created by the US exploration vessel in the offshore of Ecuador in 1993, reaching 2111 meters below the sea floor, and the local water depth is 3462.8 meters. The "Earth" also created a world record of 7,740 meters in depth from the sea surface to the seabed in the offshore area of Miyagi Prefecture in April. The local water depth is 6883.5 meters, and 856.5 meters is drilled below the sea floor. The location of the drill is about 80 kilometers from the coast of Hachinohe City. In 2008, the Earth was piloted there, drilling 650 meters below the sea floor and confirming the presence of methane hydrate and natural gas. The Marine Research and Development Agency is scheduled to drill to a depth of approximately 2,200 meters below the seabed by mid-September.
