The purpose of paint maintenance for ships:

Ships in operation are maintained with paint in order to maximize the service life of the ship’s interior, exterior, and various equipment, and to minimize sea bottom life. To reduce the resistance of the ship. Therefore, ships in operation should establish and implement a long-term, preventive maintenance plan, which includes regular flushing, recoating, and the passage of oil after a certain period of time.

The treatment of the surface of the components prior to the construction of the marine paint:

(1) When the shipyard is docked for repairs, first the salt on the hull due to seawater is rinsed off with high-pressure fresh water, and then the blasting method (or shot blasting method, commonly known as “sanding”) is used to remove the scales. The peeled paint is knocked off, and it is accepted by the paint representative, the ship's maintenance representative or the ship's acceptance. It is considered that the surface of the hull can be painted after meeting the requirements;

(2) Where sandblasting is not possible or where sandblasting (small area) is not worthwhile, sanding and hammering can be used to remove rust.

Knife shovels use rust-removing hammers and blade brush wire brushes to enter manually, whereas mechanical sanding usually uses pneumatic tools, such as pneumatic boring heads, grinding wheels, and rotating metal parts to remove rust from the surface of the components. Compressed air blows off dust on the surface and it is better to rinse it with fresh water.

(3) For two-component paints, it is also required to roughen the surface before painting to increase the adhesion of the paint surface.
