The Changchun Institute of Opto-Electronics developed a water-triggered "nano-fluorescent" based on "super carbon nano dots".

Recently, Qu Songnan, associate researcher and research team of the Changchun Institute of Optics, Fine Mechanics and Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, proposed the concept of super carbon nano dots for the first time and developed a water-triggered nano fluorescent bomb based on super carbon nano dots. The "nanometer fluorescent bomb" paper can realize a variety of practical applications such as water-jet fluorescent printing and fingerprint sweat hole fluorescence collection. The relevant results are published in the International Journal of Advanced Materials (DOI: 10.1002/adma.201403635).

Fluorescence imaging can be used as an effective technique and has important applications in data storage, data security and clinical diagnosis. This method relies heavily on the development of new smart light emitting materials. In recent years, the emergence of a new kind of carbon nanomaterials, namely fluorescent carbon dots, has made the original non-luminous carbon material exhibit excellent light emission characteristics, which has caused great concern in the world.

The research team led by Qu Shunan, an associate researcher at Changchun Guangji Institute, has started research on new types of fluorescent carbon dots since 2012 and has successively obtained a series of scientific research results: (1) A carbon nano-dots based on urea as a nitrogen source were first made The biocompatible fluorescent ink (Advngew. The previous studies of carbon nanodots focused on the luminescent properties of individual carbon nanodots. Recently, Qu Songnan and his research team have made new breakthroughs in the field of fluorescent carbon nano dots. He first proposed the concept of “super carbon nano dots” and developed a water trigger based on “super carbon nano dots”. "Nano-fluorescent bomb" makes carbon nano-dots a new type of smart luminescent material.

This "super carbon nano-dots" are self-assembled in toluene by partially carbon chain modified carbon nanodots. Due to aggregation, its fluorescence quenching shows extremely weak fluorescence. This "super carbon nanodots" will decompose into individual small-sized carbon nanodots when exposed to water, which in turn will lead to enhanced photoluminescence.

At the same time, this "super carbon nanodots" paper composite will produce rapid water-induced photoluminescence enhancement. This “Super Carbon Nano Dot” composite paper can be used as waterless printing paper for water-saving fluorescent printing to achieve more environmentally friendly information storage and information encryption. This low cost, environmentally friendly, new carbon-based nanomaterial can also be used in medical and diagnostic applications.

By pressing the finger on the "super carbon nano dot" composite paper, the sweat hole distribution pattern on the fingerprint can be quickly and accurately collected, thereby realizing safer and more reliable personal fingerprint information collection and personal health diagnosis.
