Ericsson R&D Human Body Network Technology Up to 10Mbps

Ericsson develops human body network technology at rates up to 10Mbps

Ericsson announced that through a series of proof of concept and technology demonstration, when the human body is used as a communication line, there is a weak but safe electrical signal through the body, and can achieve a transmission rate of 6-10Mbps.

Experiments have shown that the human body can be used as part of a communications network - when one holds a mobile phone and the other hand on another device, the human body can instantly send and receive information at high speeds. Ericsson said that the highest rate of 10 Mbps achieved in the experiment has been able to transmit almost any information content, and it is not far behind the realization of a 20-40 Mbps rate.

Ericsson named the human body as a communication wire as Connected Me. It is understood that the examples that have been successfully used for demonstrations include: streaming music transmission from smartphones, photo transmission from mobile phones, access to web links from devices, and opening passwords to door handles to open access control.

According to Ericsson, the smartphone used for the demonstration is equipped with a special digital circuit for capacitive data transmission. The circuit is connected to a metal plate whose function is to send signals to the human body. On the other hand, similar circuits and metal plates are installed on the receiving end to detect weak signals flowing through the human body.

According to reports, the signal was sent by adjusting the voltage at the transmitter's electrodes and monitoring the potential difference at the receiver's electrodes. At this time, in addition to the potential difference in the human body, a small current will flow.

Ericsson said that the physical phenomenon used in the experiment is “capacitive coupling,” which uses signals naturally generated in the human body to transfer information between the human body and the device. Because the test has very low electrical power through the human body, it will not cause any harm to the human body.

The significance of this experiment is that it uses "capacitive coupling" technology to transmit information through organisms such as the human body. If this method is combined with all conventional communication methods in current digital communications, a super-strong combination can be obtained. It not only facilitates technological innovation, but also realizes the interactivity of current technologies that are difficult or impossible to implement. .

Ericsson believes that "capacitive coupling" technology may have a huge market for future exploration. With this technology, human life will become more convenient. For example, by touching the door handle, you can open the access control; touch the cash register to complete the shopping payment; you can exchange business card information by shaking hands; touch the TV screen to download pictures and movies; you can get a simple touch, you can get Electronic prints containing internet links, applications, and information.

It is understood that MIT has demonstrated the "capacitive coupling" technology as early as 1995, when the transmission rate was 2.4Kbps. Since then, South Korea's KAIST University and Japanese telecommunications operator NTT DoCoMo have also conducted this human communication technology research and development.
