Miniaturization, diversification, PC and openness are the main directions for the future development of DCS. At present, the market occupied by small DCS has gradually shared with PLC, industrial PC and FCS. In the future, small DCSs may first be integrated with these three systems, and the "soft DCS" technology will first be developed in small DCS. PC-based control will be more widely used in small and medium-scale process control, and DCS manufacturers will also launch small DCS systems based on industrial PCs. The open DCS system will extend both upwards and downwards at the same time, so that the field data from the production process can flow freely throughout the enterprise, realize the seamless connection of information technology and control technology, and develop towards the integration of measurement and control tubes.

According to the definition of IEC61158, a fieldbus is a digital, bidirectional, multi-branch communication network installed between a field device in a manufacturing or process area and an automatic control device in a control room. The fieldbus enables the measurement and control equipment to have digital computing and digital communication capabilities, which improves the measurement, transmission and control accuracy of the signal and improves the function and performance of the system and equipment. The SC65C/WG6 working group of IEC/TC65 began to work on the introduction of the world's single fieldbus standard in 1984. After 16 years of hard work, IEC61158-2 was introduced in 1993, and the standard setting was later confusing. . There are eight sub-sets of IEC61158 fieldbus international standards announced in early 2000, namely:

Type 1 IEC Technical Report (FFH1);

Type 2 Control-NET (supported by Rockwell, USA);

Type 3 Profibus (supported by Siemens, Germany);

Type 4P-NET (supported by ProcessData, Denmark);

Type 5FFHSE (formerly FFH2) high speed Ethernet (supported by FisherRosemount, USA);

Type 6 Swift-Net (supported by Boeing, USA);

Type 7WorldFIP (supported by Alsto, France);

Type 8 Interbus (supported by PhoenixContact, USA).

In addition to the eight fieldbuses of IEC61158, IECTC17B has adopted three bus standards: SDS (SmartDistributedSystem); ASI (ActuatorSensorInterface); DeviceNET.
