Solar panels help the United States Tianlong spacecraft

"Dragon" spacecraft solar panels fully developed simulation.

The SpaceX Dragon, the first spacecraft mission to perform the International Space Station mission, installed collapsible solar panels as a source of electricity. The solar panel can run sensors, drive heating and cooling systems, and maintain communication between the space station and the SpaceX space navigation ground command system. The "Tianlong" solar panel can generate up to 5000 watts of electricity, enough to supply more than 80 standard bulbs. The solar panel was protected by a protective cover during launch, and started within minutes of the separation of Space and Falcon 9 from the space station. Although many commercial satellites and NASA, including the Hubble Space Telescope, have applied solar panels for many tasks, the "Tianlong" will be the first American commercial transport spacecraft to use solar panels.

Past US spacecraft like the Mercury, Gemini, and Apollo are all using fuel cells or battery packs. The amount of chemical reactants (usually oxygen and hydrogen) that a spacecraft can carry is limited; the battery itself has limitations in terms of quality and carrying capacity.

A key benefit of solar cells is that they provide long-term motivation. It is combined with an efficient battery pack to provide a reliable source of renewable electricity. In the sun, the solar panels of the "Tianlong" spacecraft recharged the battery packs. When the spacecraft was in the shadow of the earth, the charged battery packs began to provide power. With the help of solar panels, whether it is the space station or the distant Mars, the "Dragon" has enough energy to perform longer space travel.

Equipped with solar panels

Install solar panels.

The collapsible solar panels installed by the "Dragon" were developed by SpaceX engineers. To enable them to adapt to the harsh environment of space, our engineers conducted hundreds of hours of rigorous testing of the panels, including thermal tests, vacuum tests, structural tests, and electrical tests.

Early detection of solar panels

After these tests were completed, the solar panels were sent to the SpaceX Cape Canaveral launch base for final integration. The solar panels and the cowl used to protect the folded panels during launch have also been installed to prepare for the first space station tour of the "Dragon". (Translation: Erin)
