Japan develops all resin battery

According to the "Japan Economic News" report on February 14, Japan's Sanyo Chemical Industry and start-ups from Keio University are actively researching and developing. It will use this to catch up with all-solid-state batteries and air batteries that are currently leading in the next-generation battery research and development competition. The lithium-ion battery will be continuously expanded for automobiles and other uses.

Sanyo Chemical will contribute capital to battery startup APB. APB was founded by Hideaki Hori, a special professor at the Graduate School of Keio University in Japan. He once led the research and development of pure electric vehicle (EV) lithium battery in Nissan. He also proposed a "full-resin battery" development plan to fundamentally prevent fire accidents by eliminating the metal in the battery structure.

An all-resin battery is covered with an electrode material such as lithium by a gel-like resin containing an electrolyte, and serves as the positive and negative electrodes of the battery. Its characteristic is that even in a fully charged state, whether it is drilling or cutting, it will not catch fire. The production cost is expected to be less than 12 yen per watt-hour, which is lower than 15-20 yen for traditional lithium-ion batteries.

The new generation battery that is currently most concerned is the "all solid battery". TDK began mass production in the world in 2018 using a ceramic type method, and Toyota Motor and Murata Manufacturing Co., Ltd. are also vigorously developing. However, most views hold that the official popularity will be around 2030. Sodium ion batteries have also received much attention. French startup Tiamat has announced that it will be commercialized. Sumitomo Chemical and NEC Glass are devoted to materials research.
