JAXA teamed up with Toyota to build a fuel cell lunar rover plan to launch in 2029

According to foreign media reports, Toyota and Japan Aerospace Research and Development Agency (JAXA) signed an agreement to build a hydrogen-powered lunar rover. It is reported that the lunar rover will allow astronauts to explore potential resources there on the moon. Under the agreement, Toyota and JAXA will spend three years developing prototype vehicles, but the final lunar rover is not expected to be launched until about 2029.

It is reported that JAXA and Toyota announced in March that they are considering cooperation. At that time, they showed the concept of a fuel cell electric detection vehicle-a six-wheeled truck, which can be used as a vehicle or a mobile habitat.

The probe is about 20 feet long, 17 feet wide, and 12 feet high, and has about 460 cubic feet of space inside. Normally, this probe car is used by two people, but it can be expanded to four people in case of emergency. As a result of the pressure treatment inside, astronauts can take off the spacesuit inside.

Toyota Lunar Rover will support manual driving, it is estimated that it can also be operated remotely, and it can also drive autonomously. NASA said that their goal is to study how to allow the frozen water on the moon to exist on the moon for a long time and to study and test the technology that can be used on more distant planets.

According to the newly signed joint agreement, the first step they will do is planning. In fiscal 2019, Toyota and JAXA will develop the technical elements needed for lunar rover and then formulate specifications. This prototype is expected to be based on Mirai, a hydrogen fuel cell car launched by Toyota.

By fiscal 2020, Toyota and JAXA will focus on building a prototype. In FY2021, they will test the prototype on the earth to evaluate its performance.

Although this three-year project will officially end at that time-at least from the current terms of the agreement, there will be a tentative plan for a lunar launch in 2029.

From 2024, the design, manufacture and evaluation of engineering models will be carried out successively until the design of the actual model. The production work of the lunar rover is expected to begin in 2027, and at the same time, performance and quality tests will also be carried out.

However, the manufacturing of such a vehicle will face very big challenges. First, JAXA envisions that it can travel more than 6,000 miles in dangerous terrain covered with craters, cliffs, and hills; in addition, the Toyota lunar rover will remain in an environment with much higher radiation levels and extreme temperatures than the earth.
