How to select and implement PDM

First, what is PDM

Since the 1960s and 1970s, many companies have gradually used CAD, CAM and other technologies in the design and production process. For the manufacturing companies, although the computer-aided technology of each unit has become increasingly mature, they are all self-contained. The lack of effective information sharing and utilization between each other has formed a so-called “information island Gas. In this case, many companies realize that achieving orderly management of information will become a key factor in maintaining future leadership in the competition. Product Data Management (PDM) is a new management idea and technology that emerged in this context.

PDM can be defined as: the technology of the software as the foundation, the product as the core, the realization of the product-related data, process, and integrated management of the image.

PDM technology first appeared in the early 1980s. At that time, with the gradual maturity and wide application of CAD technology, the electronic image files of the cloud appeared in the enterprise, and the number of electronic images tends to increase exponentially. In this case, how to effectively manage these documents It has become a problem that enterprises must face. This demand has directly led to the emergence of PDM prototype technology. Subsequently, in terms of applications, PDM technology gradually increased the product structure management, workflow management and other technologies to form the first generation of PDM. The first generation of PDM functions mainly include electronic drawing warehouse, data version control and preliminary product structure management. On this basis, it has added functions such as product allocation management.

The first generation of PDM focused on the management of engineering information in the design phase. The disconnect between product design and manufacturing was not well solved. Under the background of this ocean, the concept of second generation product data management appeared. The second generation PDM has three core competencies: virtual product development management, traditional PDM and ERP systems. From the perspective of software functions, the products of this era have modules such as workflow management and product life cycle, and the scope of management extends to the enterprise level. The PDM system of this era implies such a basic management idea: through process automation, the technicians are placed in the product development pipeline, and the low-cost and high efficiency of product development is pursued through automated processes.

Although the connotation and extension of PDM continue to expand, its core context is still relatively clear. PDM is a technology that manages all product-related information and processes. It is an auxiliary tool for constructing a parallel collaborative environment from product planning to product realization across the enterprise. A mature PDM system enables all participation. People who create, communicate, and maintain product designs are free to share all data related to the product throughout the product lifecycle.

Second, the necessity of enterprises to implement PDM system

At present, the following common problems faced by enterprises can be solved by implementing PDM:

1. The data is scattered in the military, the information sharing is low, the information reuse is low, and the security is poor.

Design data and technical documentation are mostly scattered in each designer's computer, even in the minds of individuals, lacking confidentiality and security measures. And as the number of products increases, more technical documents and design data, queries are not Convenience, resulting in low reusability of design information, loss and waste of product design knowledge, and growth of design cycle, thus affecting the R&D capability and core competitiveness of the entire enterprise.

2. The contents of electronic and paper drawings are not uniform, the engineering changes are slow and the information consistency is poor, and there is no reasonable version management and necessary printing control.

At present, the production of domestic enterprises is still based on paper medium, and the CAD design drawings must be printed into drawings before they can be used in the production process. Electronic drawings can't be updated synchronously when the drawings are changed, and everyone can print them because of the lack of necessary print control. The validity of the final electronic image file is not valid.

3. Lack of automatic extraction of BOM, manual extraction is easy to cause information inaccurate.

BOM (bill of materials) is a product structure data file that can be recognized by the computer. BOM is an important part of the PDM system. It runs through the concept design, calculation analysis, detailed design, process planning, prototype trial production, manufacturing and manufacturing, sales maintenance, etc. In the process, it is the carrier of product data transmission throughout the life cycle. The BOM in the PDM system is workflow-oriented. The life cycle involved is related to the tools of state and workflow management and change management. Automate the cycle-changing process to complete the most complex enterprise data management tasks.
