Recently, Professor Xia Hui of Nanjing University of Science and Technology successfully synthesized amorphous FeOOH/graphene composite nanometers. The new amorphous material will greatly reduce the cost of supercapacitors and greatly promote its commercialization.

Research on supercapacitor electrode materials has been focused on nanocrystalline materials, but the nature of nanocrystalline materials that are difficult to expand or shrink limits the cycle life and fast charge and discharge performance of supercapacitors. At the same time, the synthesis of nanocrystalline materials is usually carried out at high temperatures, which greatly increases the production cost, and the process is complicated, and it is difficult to mass-produce, which greatly limits the widespread promotion of supercapacitors, and currently only a small amount is used in electric vehicles.

In recent years, researchers have begun experimenting with amorphous materials for electrode materials for supercapacitors. Compared to crystalline materials, the amorphous material has a lower synthesis temperature, thus greatly reducing the synthesis cost of the electrode material. The structure of the amorphous material is also more stable and the volume can be regulated. However, the fly in the ointment is that the poor conductivity of the amorphous material and the small specific surface area limit the performance of the supercapacitor to a certain extent. Therefore, the development of low-cost, mass-produced, high cycle life and rapid charge and discharge of new amorphous materials is the core scientific issue in the field of new energy storage, and also the problem of industrial production of super capacitors in the world.

The amorphous FeOOH/graphene composite nanosheets successfully synthesized by Liu Jiaqi and the instructor Professor Xia Hui are green, simple and easy to synthesize. The composite electrode material exhibits excellent supercapacitor performance, has a high cycle life, and can be quickly charged and discharged.
